This time of year is ALWAYS the toughest to stay healthy. But there are things you can do to enhance your immune system so you can fight off both viral and bacterial infections, making antibiotics a last resort. Even the World Health organization (WHO) recognizes that in order for us to not increase antibiotic-resistant infectious diseases, we need to look outside of the loop of standard medicine and go natural, as we retrain our bodies to respond to sickness and disease.
The immune system is our barometer of health, so immune enhancement is of utmost importance. Several issues can be addressed for optimal health: diet, lifestyle, stress levels, environmental factors, and genetic uniqueness.
My recommendations for enhancing your immune function:
HERBAL MEDICINE- (These herbs are not only antiviral but antibacterial…they also strengthen your immune system). Goldenseal, Echinacea and Garlic are among the most widely used and most effective of all immune building plants.
ESSENTIAL OILS- (These can be rubbed on the body or breathed in via hot water vapor, towel compresses, or diffuser). Tea tree oil, Thyme, Eucalyptus, Lavender, Oregano, and Peppermint.
VITAMINS AND MINERALS- (Most commonly used to build immunity). Zinc, Selenium, Vitamins A,B,C, and E, Beta Carotene, and Coenzyme Q10.
PROBIOTICS- I cannot state this enough!!!! Probiotics are ESSENTIAL to a strong immune system ESPECIALLY!!! ESPECIALLY!!! If you have been on an anti-biotic. An anti-biotic kills ALL bacteria in our systems. Not just the bad, but the good as well. So, when that drug is finished, you are left with no healthy flora or bacteria to fight off all the infectious germs you take in via food, air, drink, etc. Then, your body is stuck doing overtime trying to create new healthy “disease fighters” , all the while you are still exposed to a world of germs and disease, especially this time of year. I take a 35 Billion Strand Probiotic which includes Acidophilus and Bifidobacteria.
STRESS REDUCTION- You think I’m kidding, right? Stress is a way of life for most of us, but if we can take time to start our day with a few minutes in meditation or prayer, being thankful for one or two specific things…we can train our mind to relax and focus on what is important. During the day, take “breathing breaks”. Take 10 deep breaths and be conscious of the air/life you are taking in, and consciously breathe out the stress and negativity of the moment. It can change your life.
DIET- Avoid processed foods, sugar, alcohol, and artificial sweeteners as much as possible. Focus on eating veggies, fruits, nuts, healthy proteins, and lots of water.
Let’s take charge of our own health and have a happy, healthy, and blessed year!
